WHAT IS YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE?
A happy blend of fine-art and fashion wedding photography with a photojournalistic flare. I am always attempting to capture images that evoke passion from the couples that I work with in a fun, energetic and tasteful manner. My overall goal is to capture each person in an accurate and representative way so that their personality can shine through in each and every photograph.

Well, it’s simple…
Step 1: Get in touch and send me the following. You and your partner’s names, your wedding date and location.
Step 2: I’ll let you know if the date is available, and if it is; select a package that suits your needs/or we can set up a meeting, talk over the phone or video chat to go over more details. The choice is yours.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SHOOTING WEDDINGS?
As a wedding photographer, I’ve documented nearly 200 weddings in the four years of being in business. In this short period of time, I have had the honor of becoming a preferred vendor at several wedding venues and have had my work published several times in both print and online. I have traveled throughout New England and surrounding states and have worked with couples in destination wedding locations. I pride my work as covering a broad spectrum of diverse locations, religion, cultures and traditions – from City Hall weddings and elopements where I’ve been the only witness, to 300+ person affairs. I’ve documented Catholic, Jewish, Episcopalian, Indian, Lao, Egyptian Coptic, non-denominational Christian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Muslim, same-sex, and non-religious ceremonies. I would love to learn all about the customs and events at your wedding.
As a word-of-mouth business, I have no paid advertising or paid listings with venues. I work with wonderful couples that have referred me to so many other great couples and families and maintaining great relationships and lasting relationships with each and everyone of them is the most important thing for me. It’s very important that I have trusting relationships and happy clients who will recommend me to their friends and family.
WHEN WILL OUR PHOTOS BE READY?
I am as anxious as my clients in wanting to see the images. I typically post the images (at your request) to social media sights, such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest as well as to your private gallery within 48-72 hours. Your final images will be delivered within 30 days after your wedding date. You will receive a link to a personalized online gallery to view photos and order prints and digital images from our professional lab. You’ll also receive a custom encased USB flash drive in the mail shortly after with all your images and a digital photo release.
WHEN DO YOUR CLIENTS TYPICALLY START BOOKING WITH YOU?
For you planners out there, we can start booking 18 months ahead of time, but on average, most clients book 8 to 14 months before the wedding day. I have taken on weddings with less than a weeks notice and with up to two years notice. Regardless of your situation, I am here to answer any questions you may have and help you through the process.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU’RE BOOKED? ARE WE STRANDED WITH NO ONE TO SHOOT OUR SPECIAL DAY?
If your date is already booked up, I would be happy to refer you to a another fabulous Photographer that I have personally worked with on others weddings.
WHAT TYPE OF EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE AND DO YOU HAVE BACKUP GEAR?
I am currently capturing images with two professional Canon digital cameras. I am currently capturing images on a Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 6D camera bodies that I use with a variety of Canon L Series Macro, Zoom, Telephoto and Prime lenses. I prefer the use off camera flash in the form of Canon speed lights due to the portability and versatility that they provide to the photographer. Another added benefit is that it allows me to shoot wirelessly without oversized strobe units with large and cumbersome battery packs. This translates to a very mobile and professional caliber lighting platform that can be utilized in any outdoor or indoor setting. I can literally take the studio to the client and shoot in an environment that is comfortable for the entire family.
DO YOU TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF NEW ENGLAND?
Absolutely! I love traveling and shooting at different locations. I have shot weddings throughout Tennessee, the East Coast, New England and destination venues in Cancun, Mexico and Italy. If you want me to travel to a tropical paradise to be a part of recording your special day, you can count me in!
DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?
Yes, I am fully insured (liability and equipment coverage) and am able to provide proof/certificate of liability insurance to your venue at their request. Having insurance is very important to not only the photographer, but also to you. You should absolutely make it a point to check and confirm that all of your vendors are fully insured. WHAT FORMAT WILL MY IMAGES BE?
I only shoot in RAW and have the ability to format the pictures into JPEG files so that clients can view them with standard computer software. If you know nothing about what a RAW file is, it is the digital negative. Shooting images in RAW allows the photographer to have complete control over exposure, white balance and other essential parts of a photograph. This is a benefit to my clients in that it allows me to deliver the highest quality products available. RAW files are “loss-less” and hold more data than JPEGs resulting in a higher quality digital file. Photographs are memories of special fleeting moments in life that should not be compromised with lower quality files such as JPEGs.
HOW MANY PICTURES WILL I GET?
The number of photographs you will receive depends on many things… the hours of coverage, the variety of locations and how much time I have for shooting the bride and groom portraits, the amount of family photos and wedding party photos, the weather, the types of details you have and how involved they are, the number of guests you have and how much fun and partying they’ll be doing. Typically for weddings one can expect to receive 800 or more images.
DO YOU GIVE THE COPYRIGHT FOR THE PHOTOS?
There is a difference between “copyright” and “usage rights.” As the creator of the photographs, I forever own and hold the copyright to the photographs. As the copyright owner, I provide specific “usage rights” to my clients for either personal or commercial use of the photographs. In these instances, you will be provided access to an online gallery where you can download the high resolution digital image files, which will allow you to order prints yourself or print them out at home. This option also allows you to send photos electronically to friends and family.
DO YOU MAKE BLACK AND WHITE IMAGES?
I almost prefer black & white photos at times, that is how much I love the power of a great black and white photograph! So, I would have to say YES! Often when I’m shooting, I see the image in my head as how it would look in black & white. In digital photography, I shoot all images in color and can process any photograph into a multitude of colors and shades of black and white and other various color filters. I want you to feel secure in knowing that all of the images will be captured in full color and will be presented in various color variations for you to get a better idea of the look you prefer or to assist you in making a decision. It really all depends on what the client wants.
WHAT ARE YOUR WEDDING ALBUMS LIKE?
After much research I have found a new and fantastic wedding album company, Madera. Previously I had been utilizing three separate album companies, none of which I was completely satisfied with. I wanted an album to be simple, clean and representative of my style and brand. I grew tired of explaining wedding albums like an interior designer would explain window treatments, color selection and other material selections for a home. I didn’t want a ton of options, and in order to limit the number of options, the ones that the album company offer, have to be outstanding. I think Madera is representative of everything I would want in my own wedding album. This has been my one and only album option since 2014 and myself and the couples that I work with love them!

DO YOU OFFER DISCOUNTS
Absolutely! Customer satisfaction and referrals are extremely important to Derek Halkett Photography. As a benefit to you for making the referral, I will send you $50 for each wedding referral booking you make and provide a 5% discount to you on your next session. I will also extend the $100 discount to the client being referred to me. I also offer 5% discounts to all active and retired military members. This is my way of thanking you for your service. If you become a repeat customer and choose me to record your special moments year after year, I will extend additional savings to you. My primary goal is to provide excellent photography services at an affordable price.
I am accepting wedding bookings throughout Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and beyond. My main cities of coverage are Knoxville, Nashville and Chattanooga Tennessee. Airfare and travel expenses are to be paid for by the client for any destination wedding. I love to shoot weddings at new locations and would be happy to be a part of your wedding or portrait session, wherever it may be.
